Video Post – What Breaks a Fast?

This week I decided to do a video post instead of a regular written one. Why? No reason. Just to change things up. After about 5 years of writing a weekly blog, I thought it would be a nice change of pace.

Please provide a written version of this for those of us who can’t do video. It’s such an important topic.
Thanks for all you do!

Thank you Doctor Fung! I wanted to add some MCT to make the fast easier. The vlog answered my question with a common sense approach and a focus on the insulin lowering effects of the fasted state.

Wow! The two women portrayed in this video are projecting a PARTICULARLY enjoyable experience with the tea and coffee they are sipping! And how long did they have to spend in Makeup and Wardrobe before they were ready for the shoot?! Next video, why not show some ordinary looking OFPs * drinking out of ordinary mugs? Dr. Fung’s commentary is informative and helpful all by itself; I don’t need to see two actors modelling the sipping of coffee and tea; I already have a lifetime of experience drinking both and don’t need to see it demonstrated. As an adult-learner, however,… Read more »

What about if I need food with medication? I need to take a daily 20mg dose of Xarelto (blood thinner) with my evening “meal.” Can that meal just be a mouthful of coconut oil or half an avocado? Would this work, and if so, would the autophagic benefit of fasting be there to help dissolve the blood clots?

Not sure about you, but I do take all my meds with only having coffee with heavy cream in it.

Thank you Dr Fung. What would the impact on autophagy be if adding a little cream to your coffee while fasting?

But does taking in calories affect autophagy? I want to fast to get rid of loose skin from weight loss, but don’t want to ruin the effort with MCT oil or bone broth if those will counter the desired effects.

Protein interrupts autophagy so I would not use the bone broth as it most definitely contains protein. The MCT oil is only fat.

So if you were to eat 500 calories throughout the day, how does that effect autophagy?

Hi, I am about to start a 5 day water fast, and looking forward to it and all the benefits hoped for … I am on Synthroid for hypothyroidism since 1994, and taking 0,112 mg for at least 10-15 years now. I was wondering if I should keep taking the Rx during the fast … Thank you Dr Fung … your are a real inspiration for so many of us …

What about exercise during shorter fasts (16-18 hours)? exercise elevates my blood glucose levels from 5 to something like 5.8, which is technically too high for a fasting level. Does this defeat the benefits of the fast?

But will the cream or whatever , stop or slow apoptosis?

rachel

Do you mean will it stop autophagy? Yes, adding cream will break a fast and stop autophagy.

In the video, Dr. Fung says that it WON’T break the fast.

We will allow a “spash” of cream in coffee/tea for those who don’t want to cut it out completely. 1 tbsp or less… So, that will depend how much you put in. It will however halt autophagy. If that is what you are looking for then water only fasts is what you want to do.
