#IDMsuccess – Lakshmi Conquers Type 2 Diabetes with Fasting

I was diagnosed with Diabetes in October 2012. I was 149 lbs and 5 feet tall. At the time I thought, no big deal! I’ll lose the weight, control my sugars with diet, exercise and take some medications!” Needless to say that didn’t work. I became exhausted and I was shocked to see that my body couldn’t even handle 10 g of carbs without my sugars spiking up. Metformin made me miserable and my 2-hr postprandial (after meal) sugars were over 200 with just 2 tablespoons of rice! I assumed I must have had a severe case of diabetes.

In 2014 I lost some weight by altering my diet. I based this diet my 2-hr post-meal blood sugars. My weight went down to 142 lbs (from 149 lbs)! I lost 7 lbs but there was no change in dress size! At the time I wore a size 10 or 12. One day, I told myself, “This is it. This is the year! I wasn’t born with diabetes hence I don’t need to live with it! I need to get to the basics.” That started my search for #curediabetes #reversediabetes #kickdiabetes #burydiabetes

In May of 2016, I finally decided to watch a lecture by Dr. Jason Fung that a friend of mine shared with me a few months before (I hate watching lectures!). On May 5th, 2016 I did my first 16:8 which marked the beginning of a fantastic journey (even if I didn’t know it at the time). I read and studied everything that Dr. Fung wrote. I was simply fascinated! From April 2016 to January 2017, I lost 3 inches. Needless to say, I was impressed and thrilled!

I joined the IDM program in June of 2017 with an A1C of 9.2 and fasting blood sugars of 200! I was afraid to do 24 hrs and longer fasts and hence decided I needed a coach! Nadia Pateguana was my coach, and I started doing 42 hr fasts 2 to 3 times a week. It was magical! From June of 2017 to February of 2018 I dropped to a size 2! I made many keto meals but treated myself to higher carb meals quite a few times a month. I learnt to feast and fast intelligently. My A1C came down to 6.5 (from 9.2) within 4 months. I don’t get fasting blood sugars of 200 anymore.

Today is March 25th of 2019 and I have come a long way! My blood sugars are always within the normal to prediabetic range. I have miles to go and my journey continues…

I am forever grateful to Dr. Jason Fung, Nadia Pateguana, Megan Ramos and everyone and anyone associated with the IDM program. I am grateful for the many friends I have made along my journey. I hope my story inspires someone to take charge of his/her life. Stay blessed!

Interested in you fasting number now that your claiming success. Under 200 doesn’t indicate a number low enough to prevent damage, at least in my understanding.

Since she said that her numbers are in the normal to prediabetic range, I’d assume Lakshmi’s fasting BG is running from below 100 to below 125, since those are the numbers associated with normal and prediabetic

I stick to a fasting schedule: 16 to 20 hrs nowadays. I keep it clean except for a cup of chai. Or many days just green tea/hotwater or plain water. In a feast, I add natural fats/enough fiber like green vegetables and eat to satiety. I studied the blog and that helped a lot. Best wishes!

I began Dr. Fungs lifestyle change in January of this year after reading his book in December. I had been diagnosed that November with type2 diabetes and my weight had crept to 190#. My a1c was at 6.8. Lipid panel not good, and spilling protein in my urine with liver enzymes elevated. I now know that simple carbs and grazing were indeed the culprits. It is April and with just weekly 24-36h fasts and eating only once per day within a 4-6h window I am down to 153#. My a1c i5.8, my lipid panel including triglycerides is finally in normal… Read more »

Hi Lakshmi, I am a pre-diabetic though I am on the underweight category (I’m 5’4″ but only weigh 102 lbs). I have been doing this 16:8 eating pattern for some time (5 months now) but haven’t seen any improvement in my Hba1c (which is around 5.7-5.9%, pre-diabetic range). Do you recommend longer fasting schedules for underweight people? My last blood tests revealed I have pretty normal triglyceride and cholesterol numbers but my blood counts for both RBC, WBC have dropped since I started this fasting schedule, so I am worried that might impact my immunity and so wouldn’t prefer doing… Read more »

I would just keep at 16:8 and try lowering carb intake and add natural fats. If I were you I wont really concerned.

Awesome results Lakshmi. I am doing right now 20 – 24 hr fasts but not seeing any results. I hear a lot about Keto and fat adaptation for doing longer fasts. I am a vegetarian by my religious beliefs. All I eat are carbs. What would be the diet for me to do long fasts?.

So encouraging! When you fast for 42 hours, 3 x per week, do you do that consecutively, or how ever it fits on a weekly basis ?

My dear .. I am happy for you and for what you achieved but I need help here.. how many hours of fasting you advise me to do .. since 3 weeks I am fasting 16/8 hours . And very or minimal carb ketogenic diet but yet sometimes my fasting RBS would be still high … I already lost weight and I beleive I can not lose more . Otherwize I will be skinny. Any help could be really good for me. Thanks alot

I would advise to speak with one of our educators as everyone has different medical issues, medications, etc. that would mean more specialized approach for a fasting regime.
