You asked…

In the Facebook group last week, Patricia Berry asked: “Is full fat coconut milk in coffee an ok substitute for HWC on fast days?”

Absolutely! It is a great dairy free alternative. Just make sure it is unsweetened full fat coconut milk.

People should avoid adding fat to their beverages if they’re trying to lose weight. But if they’re looking to gain weight or want to maintain weight, then fatty tea and coffee is OK.

Bulletproof can mean a variety of things. The original recipe called for one tablespoon of heavy cream, MCT or coconut oil, as well as one tablespoon of ghee or butter. I consider a bulletproof tea or coffee to be almost a meal – as that’s close to 45g of fat alone. People looking to lose weight can only eat fat to satiation, beyond that will result in weight gain and no weight loss.

I usually recommend people take no more than three tablespoons of fat per 36 hour period of fasting, and encourage them to decrease that over time.

Highlights from the last members-only Q&A.

Health educator at IDM Jeff McCann hosted a live Q&A with IDM members last week. Beyond tackling topics like sleeping while fasting, dry mouth, muscle mass and ketones, he also touched on joint aches:

“One of the questions I get is: ‘My legs and joints ache while I’m fasting. What can help?’ That’s a common one, and one of the big things you can do about it is magnesium. We don’t do too many supplements in IDM, but one of the things that we do is magnesium. Another one is salt.

“Salt replaces your electrolytes while you’re fasting, and magnesium is one of those things that helps with the aches and pains. We recommend 400 milligrams of magnesium a day. There’s an article on the IDM community about the best types of magnesium.

“We recommend magnesium citrate to start. It doesn’t cause too many issues or side effects. If you find that [400 mg is] causing loose stools, and sometimes it can, magnesium citrate tends to be the [best approach]. But, if you find that that happens you can always break it up. Break it in half. Take half in the morning and half at night.

“I usually find that anyone who is experiencing those loose stools through magnesium, it usually clears up within a few days to a week after taking it. So, I wouldn’t be too worried about it. Magnesium citrate is a great thing.

“Another great one is Epsom salt baths. It’s a great way to end the day. If you’re doing longer fasts, like a five-day extended fast, two or three Epsom salt baths throughout that period is definitely recommended.”*

* Note that Epsom salts are not recommended if you have heart problems, high blood pressure or diabetes.

Dr. Fung @ Low Carb Denver

Dr. Fung and Nadia Pateguana, ND are at Low Carb Denver this week to give a talk on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

PCOS is a common condition among females of childbearing age. Women afflicted with it produce higher-than-normal amounts of male hormones, causing them to skip menstrual periods and making it harder for them to get pregnant.

But, at its core, PCOS is a condition that is tied to insulin resistance. Therefore, the first step when it comes to addressing or preventing it is to avoid taxing your system with unnecessary insulin. That’s where fasting comes in.

A well-considered fasting regimen addresses the core issue of insulin resistance, and restores your body to its natural balance. It can help you stop and even reverse PCOS and address issues with fertility. IDM can show you how.

Twelve months ago I constantly had to go to the bathroom. I thought it was because I gave up soft drinks and was only drinking water. One day I had a stomachache. I was in bed for 4 days. The doctor’s appointment was for a Wednesday. I got sick and went to emergency room on a Monday. I was told my blood sugar level was 810 and I have diabetes. I was taking taking metformin 1000 mg twice daily. It Wasn’t really helping Last year, a family friend told me about Organic Herbal clinic and their successful Diabetes TREATMENT, I… Read more »
