IDM recently had the chance to work with USA Today on a new project called ‘The Future of Personal Health’ – a supplement dedicated to the current state and treatment of diabetes.

Among the many personalities featured in the project was IDM client Carol Anne Bell-Smith (“Meet the Woman Who’s Managing Her Diabetes With Diet And Fasting”), who reversed her own diabetes through changes to her diet and fasting.

How long should I fast?

Find the fasting routine that fits your lifestyle.

When it comes to fasting, it definitely isn’t one size fits all.

For general wellness, a 16:8 or 18:6 (i.e. 16 or 18 hours fasting and a six- or eight-hour eating window) fasting routine might be all you need. These routines are easily accomplished by cutting out one meal a day and only eating meals during the six- or eight-hour eating windows. These can be done daily.

For longer, more powerful fasts, you might start off with 24 hours. It may seem daunting to go 24 hours without food, but it’s not. You still eat every day, but some days you skip two consecutive meals. (Most often breakfast and lunch are skipped, leading to a dinner-to-dinner fasting window.) This can be done two to three times per week.

A slightly more aggressive approach would be to do 36 or 42 hours of fasting three times per week. This routine is great for disease treatment. To do a 36-hour fast, you would skip an entire day of eating. (For example, fasting from dinner Sunday to breakfast Tuesday would be about 36 hours.)

Is there an “optimal” fast for weight loss/ketosis? I have tried a 3 day fast, 42-hr fasting, 24 hr fasting and 16-8. I think I prefer 24 hr fasting. Wondering if its better to “change it up” or develop a routine. I am looking for a sustainable lifestyle that incorporates fasting. Thanks.
